I carry out research on three main topics, paleoseismology, historical seismology (historical seismogram analysis) and paleo-tsunami. My investigations largely focus on active tectonics, particularly on paleoseismology, tectonic geomorphology and quantitative geomorphology. I am interested in understanding the earthquake recurrence and seismic behaviour of active faults and their evolution over short and long periods; “how are the fault segmented?”, “what controls this segmentation?” and “how do the segments behave?” Besides, another exciting study for me is to investigate the landscape evolution in response to climatic changes and how tectonism is imprinted in these climatically influenced landforms.

An accurate geological, historical and instrumental seismic record is crucial in evaluating seismic hazard. Besides, geological invesitagions, I study historical seismograms; the recovery of historical instrumental seismic data and the re-evaluation of seismic parameters with present day cognizance.

A new interest of mine is paleo-tsunami; the documentation of historical tsunamic events within the geological record. The coasts of Muğla province have a great potential to record the large tsunami events of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Therefore we are carrying out studies on the historical and geological records of tsunamis within this area.

At the moment, my studies are regionally focused on the North Anatolian Fault and the Aegean Extensional Province. We are studying the active tectonics of the North Anatolian Fault, and re-evaluate historical seismograms for the earthquake sequence of 1912 to 1999. In the Aegean province we apply paleo-seismic trenching and other methods to reveal the earthquake recurrence interval and slip-rates of active faults and along the southern Aegean coasts we do paleotsunami investigations.
